United Nations Research Institute Develops AI Avatars to Educate on Refugee Issues

A recent initiative by a research institute affiliated with the United Nations has led to the creation of two AI-powered avatars aimed at raising awareness about refugee challenges.

Reported by 404 Media, the experiment conducted by a class at the United Nations University Center for Policy Research resulted in the development of two AI agents or avatars – Amina, a fictional refugee woman from Sudan currently residing in a refugee camp in Chad, and Abdalla, a fictional soldier associated with the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group in Sudan.

Individuals have the opportunity to interact with Amina and Abdalla on the experiment’s website, although some users encountered technical difficulties during registration attempts.

Eduardo Albrecht, a Columbia professor and senior fellow at UNU-CPR, mentioned to 404 Media that the project was an exploratory endeavor rather than a formal proposal to the UN.

Potential Applications and Challenges

A document outlining the research highlighted the potential use of these avatars in advocacy efforts to solicit support from donors. However, feedback from workshop participants indicated mixed reactions, with some expressing concerns that refugees should have their own voices heard without AI intermediaries.
