Robert Keele made a heartfelt announcement this week, revealing that he will be stepping down from his role as xAI’s head of legal after a little over a year with the company. Keele cited his desire to spend more time with his children as the primary reason for his departure. In his statement, Keele also acknowledged a difference in viewpoints with xAI’s CEO, Elon Musk, who has yet to comment on Keele’s decision to leave.

Keele expressed his love for his two young children, emphasizing that he feels he hasn’t been able to spend enough time with them due to the demands of his job. Despite describing his experience at the AI startup as “incredible” and working with Musk as “the adventure of a lifetime,” Keele admitted that he found it challenging to balance his family and professional responsibilities simultaneously.

The news of Keele’s departure elicited a wave of support on social media from both his colleagues at xAI and fellow parents. When he joined xAI in May 2024 as the company’s inaugural legal head, Keele had recently launched his own legal practice, Keele Law, which was short-lived. He expressed his excitement about joining xAI at the time, calling it a remarkable opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.

Prior to his time at xAI, Keele held legal positions at Elroy Air, an autonomous aircraft manufacturer, and Airbus’s Silicon Valley innovation center.

New Leadership at xAI

Lily Lim will be taking over Keele’s role at xAI. Lim, who previously worked as a rocket scientist at NASA, specializing in spacecraft navigation, transitioned to a legal career before joining xAI in late 2024 as a privacy and IP specialist. Her background includes legal roles at various firms and companies, including ServiceNow.

Keele’s departure is part of a broader trend of executive turnover within Elon Musk’s companies. Recent changes in leadership have also been seen at X and Tesla. Musk’s work culture, known for its long hours and high expectations, has led to instances of employees sleeping at the office, exemplified by the acquisition of X (formerly Twitter).

Industry Trends

Some emerging companies, like AI coding startup Cognition, seem to be adopting a similar work ethic to stay competitive. Cognition’s CEO recently communicated to employees that work-life balance is not a priority for the company, signaling a shift towards a more intense work environment in certain sectors.
