Vodafone & Three Merger Complete: What It Means For You

The landscape of mobile networks in the UK may seem vast at first glance, with many options to choose from when selecting a SIM-only deal or a phone on contract. However, a closer look reveals that many of these providers are what are known as ‘piggyback’ providers or Mobile Virtual Networks (MVNOs). These MVNOs pay to utilize the infrastructure of the main networks, of which there are now only three prominent players: EE, O2, and the newly formed VodafoneThree.

The creation of VodafoneThree is the result of a merger between Vodafone and Three UK owners CK Hutchison, which was finalized on May 31, 2025. This merger aims to create a stronger entity that can compete in the evolving telecommunications landscape. The main goals of this merger include building a leading 5G network in Europe, enhancing the customer experience, and providing better value for mobile and broadband customers across the UK.

Existing Vodafone and Three customers can expect some significant benefits from this merger. The companies have started sharing their mobile network, which is anticipated to result in a more robust overall signal. Additionally, all MVNOs that piggyback on Vodafone and Three networks will also receive these benefits in the near future.

Looking ahead, the merger has set out key conditions to ensure that customers are protected and receive fair treatment. Mobile tariffs are capped for three years, and there are plans for significant investments in the combined 5G network to enhance coverage, quality, reliability, and capacity.

Customers of MVNOs that use Vodafone or Three networks, such as Voxi, Asda Mobile, Lebara Mobile, iD Mobile, Smarty, Honest Mobile, and Superdrug, can rest assured that their prices and contract terms will remain competitive for the next three years.

While the merger may seem to have little impact on competitors like EE, O2 (now Virgin Media O2) has entered into a network-sharing agreement with Vodafone. This collaboration aims to improve mobile coverage for customers of both networks.

In conclusion, the VodafoneThree merger signifies a significant shift in the UK telecommunications landscape. Customers can expect improved services, better network coverage, and more competitive pricing as a result of this strategic alliance. Whether you are an existing Vodafone or Three customer, or a user of an MVNO on these networks, the merger is set to bring positive changes to the mobile industry in the UK.
