B&G Foods Sells Le Sueur Brand to McCall Farms
B&G Foods has announced the sale of its Le Sueur brand, known for its premium sweet peas, green beans, and carrots, to McCall Farms. The exact amount of the transaction has not been disclosed, as per a press release issued on Friday.
The proceeds from the sale will be utilized by B&G for various corporate purposes, including debt repayment, acquisition of assets beneficial to the company’s operations, and settlement of taxes, fees, and expenses related to the sale.
This divestiture of the Le Sueur brand is the latest in a series of vegetable brand sales by B&G. In recent years, the company has sold off two of its tomato lines to a private equity firm and divested its Green Giant U.S. canned vegetable business to Seneca Foods.
Insights into the Sale
While specific details behind the Le Sueur brand sale have not been provided by B&G, insights can be drawn from the previous sale of Green Giant in late 2023.
During the Green Giant sale, B&G highlighted the challenges of operating in the canned vegetable category, citing high working capital requirements due to seasonal inventory management. Le Sueur, being a smaller brand in terms of revenue compared to Green Giant, is likely to face similar challenges.
Casey Keller, President and CEO of B&G, expressed confidence in the future performance of the Le Sueur brand under McCall Farms’ ownership. The sale is part of B&G’s strategy to streamline its brand portfolio, focusing on core brands and reducing long-term debt.
Two years ago, B&G had signaled its intention to potentially divest some or all of its frozen and canned vegetable brands, with a focus on brands with lower margins, higher working capital requirements, or those that do not align with the company’s core capabilities.
Overall, the sale of the Le Sueur brand represents a strategic move by B&G to reshape its portfolio and enhance its financial position in the market.
