Making Summer Memories: The Invisible Load

In the background of every cherished summer memory lies the unseen effort of someone managing schedules, coordinating plans, and tending to the emotional dynamics of those around them. This behind-the-scenes work often goes unnoticed and is rarely captured in vacation photos. Even a simple thank you can sometimes be overlooked.

Despite the season being associated with relaxation, someone still needs to make everything happen. Whether it’s organizing a trip, welcoming a summer intern, or managing children’s busy schedules, the invisible work of summer is significant.

It’s important to recognize and appreciate this hidden labor, and perhaps even share it when possible.

Unveiling the Truth Behind Perception

Perception is a complex process influenced by individual beliefs and interpretations. According to management scholars Robbins and Coulter (2025), perception consists of three main components:

  • The Perceiver: Individuals bring their own beliefs and assumptions to their perceptions.
  • The Target: This refers to the person or task being perceived.
  • The Context: The setting or circumstances in which the perception occurs.

These perceptions often lead to judgments based on limited information, as highlighted in the Journal of Management Research and Analysis.

    A Real-Life Scenario: Hosting a Family Event

Consider a scenario where you have meticulously planned and executed a family event. Despite the hours of preparation and coordination involved, from an outsider’s perspective, it may appear effortless. The perception is shaped by the relaxed atmosphere, your calm demeanor, and the lack of visible stress.

The triad of perception in this situation includes:

  • Perceiver: Family and friends looking forward to enjoying the event.
  • Target: You, appearing composed and in control.
  • Context: A casual gathering without the visibility of the behind-the-scenes effort.

To bridge this perception gap, it’s essential to communicate the effort involved and delegate tasks when others offer to help. Trusting others with specific responsibilities not only lightens the workload but also fosters a sense of collaboration.

Shifting Perspectives for a Shared Experience

Instead of downplaying the effort involved in organizing events or managing summer activities, embrace transparency and share the workload. By involving others in the planning process and delegating tasks, you transform them into active participants rather than passive observers.

Let’s redefine perceptions not only during summer but in all aspects of life. Engaging others in the process not only makes the work more manageable but also brings visibility to the unseen efforts that make memorable experiences possible.
