Does Your World Feel Upside Down?

In the realm of mindfulness and compassion, there is a well-known Zen proverb that resonates deeply in today’s chaotic world: “The whole world’s upside down.” This profound saying, discovered in a book by the esteemed scholar, poet, and Zen Master Norman Fisher, continues to ring true as each day unfolds. In these unprecedented times, where life seems to have taken an unexpected turn, the principles of mindfulness and compassion offer solace and guidance.

Lately, my days have been filled with somber memorial services, honoring the lives of loved ones who have passed on. From bidding farewell to my mother and cherished mentors to saying goodbye to a beloved mother-in-law, each service has left me reflecting on the fragility of life. Recently, at a service for a family member gone too soon, emotions ran high as tensions flared over the planning and execution of the memorial. The desire to control the uncontrollable, to navigate the complexities of grief and loss, was palpable.

As the day came to a close, we found ourselves seeking solace in a simple act of sharing pizza with those still present. In that moment, I recalled the wisdom of meditation teacher Sylvia Boorstein, who likened her car’s GPS system to a tool for recalibration in challenging times. Just as the GPS can recalculate a route when we take a wrong turn, so too can we reset our course in life’s tumultuous moments.

However, on this particular day, even the GPS seemed to mirror our disarray. Amidst road construction, the GPS went haywire, displaying cars moving backward on the screen in a frenzied manner. It was as if the GPS itself was grappling with confusion and disorientation, much like our own lives. In this topsy-turvy metaphor, where everything felt askew, my husband offered a Zen-like perspective: “Look at the big picture. The roads will converge again in due time.”

In times of upheaval and chaos, it’s essential to embrace the present moment without resistance. As the Zen masters advocate, accept the reality of “right now, this is the way it is.” If you find yourself navigating through a world turned upside down, try this simple meditation:

When Things Are Upside Down

Find a comfortable position to settle into.
Allow yourself to relax and soften.
Embrace the present moment without judgment or expectation.
Release tension from your body and mind.
Reflect on a challenging situation with compassion.
Offer yourself kindness and understanding.
Acknowledge that this too shall pass.
As you conclude this meditation, carry forward a sense of perspective and resilience into your day.

Feel free to share these words of wisdom with your loved ones, colleagues, and friends as a reminder to navigate life’s twists and turns with grace and compassion.
