In a recent incident, my Facebook account was compromised by hackers who took control of our Facebook page, The Way of Meditation. They managed to become admins of the page by first gaining access to my personal account and then violating Facebook’s community standards to disable it. Subsequently, they began posting strange viral videos on our page every hour, monetizing them through ads and generating $600 in revenue within just ten days. This unfortunate event shed light on the profitable scam that exists in the online world.
After much pleading with Facebook, we were able to regain control of The Way of Meditation page. Moving forward, myself and a small team will continue to share inspirational quotes, images, and articles on a daily basis. However, my personal account remains disabled due to the actions of the hackers, resulting in the loss of nearly five thousand friends and ten thousand followers. It felt like a virtual loss, akin to a house burning down and erasing all memories and history associated with it.
Despite the initial sense of grief, I found myself feeling a sense of relief rather than anger or frustration. This incident made me reflect on my usage of social media over the years. While I initially used Facebook as a platform for sharing meditation practices and engaging in discussions about spirituality, it gradually became a source of jealousy, heated debates, and mind-numbing distractions. Research even indicates that excessive use of Facebook can have a negative impact on mental health, leading to issues like social media addiction, depression, and feelings of inadequacy.
Taking a step back from Facebook allowed me to reconnect with the simplicity of the present moment. Instead of being consumed by the constant need for validation and engagement on social media, I found myself immersing in books, meditation practices, and intentional learning. By replacing the Facebook app with a language learning app, I redirected my focus towards personal growth and development.
Moreover, distancing myself from Facebook helped me break free from the polarizing and often negative discourse that dominates the platform. Instead of being bombarded with biased political views and sensationalized news, I found myself more grounded and focused on positive aspects of life. This shift in perspective reinforced the importance of mindfulness and conscious choices in shaping our reality.
In conclusion, the experience of being kicked off Facebook, while initially disruptive, has had a profound positive impact on my life. It allowed me to break free from the addictive nature of social media, reconnect with the simplicity of the present moment, and prioritize personal growth and well-being. Moving forward, I aim to continue sharing my meditation teachings and guiding others towards a more mindful and intentional way of living.
