Overview

  • In case of an iPhone failing to connect to the cellular network, solutions include restarting the device and resetting network settings.
  • Blacklisting occurs when a phone is reported stolen, resulting in the carrier blocking the network connection.
  • When purchasing a new phone from an unofficial seller, it is essential to take extra precautions by checking feedback and reviews. Consider if the cost savings outweigh the potential risks.
  • Continue reading for detailed instructions on resolving connectivity issues with an iPhone, understanding options for blacklisted or stolen phones, and tips to avoid purchasing a stolen device.

A personal anecdote comes to mind when my step-son accidentally dropped a heavy weight on his iPhone XR, shattering the screen. While it may sound like a convenient excuse to upgrade an old phone, it was a genuine mishap. At 16, it was surprising that the iPhone had survived until then.

Replacing the phone became a priority, especially while we were visiting relatives in Ireland. The urgency led us to explore UK product listings through NordVPN to find a suitable replacement swiftly.

We opted for an iPhone due to his preference, but sought a more affordable option than the latest model. Fortunately, older-generation iPhones were available at a fraction of the original price, with the iPhone 14 priced just under £500 in the UK.

A seemingly good deal presented itself on eBay—a brand-new, carrier-unlocked iPhone 14 at £470 with an additional £15 discount. The seller had positive feedback. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Little did we know that this marked the beginning of a series of unfortunate events, leading us to regret the decision of purchasing a new iPhone from eBay.

Unboxing the New iPhone

The iPhone 14 arrived sooner than expected, brand-new and sealed in its box. Initially, everything appeared fine, and my step-son was thrilled with the surprise. All seemed well until we encountered challenges setting up the phone, mainly due to forgotten Apple ID credentials and initial software updates.

After resolving the initial hurdles, the phone seemed functional, albeit with minor issues. A phone case was ordered to prevent future mishaps, and the teenager retreated to his room, content with his new device.

28 Days Later…

A sudden realization struck when the phone failed to receive verification texts and displayed no service. Upon investigation, it became apparent that the issue lay with the phone itself, leading us to troubleshoot the connectivity problem.

Troubleshooting No Service on iPhone

Following multiple attempts at resolving the service issue and ruling out network and SIM card problems, it became evident that the iPhone was the root cause of the connectivity issue. We explored various troubleshooting steps to rectify the situation but to no avail.

Resolving No Service on iPhone

  • Reboot the device
  • Check for carrier updates in Settings > General > About
  • Verify iOS updates in Settings > General > Software Update
  • Toggle Airplane mode on and off after two minutes
  • Reinsert the SIM card ensuring it is clean
  • Reset Network Settings in Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Is the iPhone Blacklisted?

Despite being carrier-unlocked and recognizing the SIM, the iPhone displayed a “Phone not allowed” message in Network settings, hinting at potential blacklisting. Verifying the IMEI number and conducting a blacklist check confirmed our suspicions.

Understanding the implications of blacklisting and the limited options available when a phone is blacklisted provided clarity on the situation.

Understanding Blacklisting

Blacklisting involves a carrier blocking cellular service on a phone, hindering network connectivity while allowing for other phone functionalities over Wi-Fi. Common reasons for blacklisting include unpaid bills or reporting a phone as stolen.

The process can occur immediately or after a few weeks, impacting a device’s ability to connect to the network unexpectedly.

Actions for a Blacklisted Phone

Resolving a blacklisted phone requires carrier intervention, with limited options for users. Seeking a refund and reporting the incident may be more beneficial than pursuing network reactivation.

Reporting a Blacklisted Phone

If a phone is blacklisted due to theft, involving the authorities can aid in criminal investigations. Reporting the incident to the police can provide additional support and potentially assist in recovering the device.

Refunds for Blacklisted Purchases

Securing a full refund after purchasing a blacklisted phone is ideal, although challenging. Exploring chargeback options with the bank and utilizing credit card protections can mitigate financial losses in such scenarios.

Preventing Phone Scams

Prioritizing reputable sellers and performing IMEI checks for second-hand and new devices can mitigate the risk of purchasing blacklisted phones. Emphasizing caution, thorough research, and patience in buying decisions can safeguard against potential scams and fraudulent transactions.
