Packaging sector warns 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum will drive up food costs

President Donald Trump made the decision to increase steel and aluminum tariffs to 50% in order to protect the U.S. steel industry. This move has raised concerns within the packaging industry, particularly among food manufacturers who fear the ripple effects it may have on their businesses.

The Can Manufacturers Institute has expressed strong opposition to the tariff increase, stating that it will result in higher costs for canned goods, ultimately impacting American families who rely on these products. Metal packaging manufacturers such as Ball and Crown have also voiced their concerns about the potential increase in costs and the impact it may have on consumers.

While the Aluminum Association appreciates the focus on strengthening the U.S. aluminum industry, they caution that the tariffs could have unintended consequences. They emphasize the need for a tailored approach to tariffs, specifically targeting countries like China that flood the market and providing relief for proven partners like Canada.

The European Commission has expressed regret over the sudden tariff increase and is pushing for the United States to reduce or eliminate all announced tariffs, including those on steel and aluminum. This decision has led to discussions about potential countertariffs or other retaliatory measures from foreign leaders.

Overall, the packaging industry is calling for a more targeted approach to tariffs in order to protect American businesses and consumers. It is important to find a balance between supporting domestic production and maintaining strong trade relationships with allies.
