The ongoing battle between major companies and app stores over payment processing fees has been a hot topic recently. Both Google and Apple have faced criticism for charging extra fees on purchases made through their platforms. However, there has been a significant development in this issue, particularly for Apple.

Apple has long required developers to use its payment processor for all transactions, allowing the company to take a cut of each payment. This restriction also prevented developers from redirecting users to external payment methods outside of the Apple App Store. This practice has been deemed anti-competitive by many, including Epic Games, who have been vocal in their opposition.

Fortunately, a California court has intervened, forcing Apple to update its App Store guidelines. The company can no longer charge fees on transactions made outside of the App Store, benefiting developers who distribute their apps through third-party stores. Additionally, developers are now free to direct users to external payment processors, potentially reducing the high prices associated with in-app purchases and subscriptions due to Apple and Google’s fees.

This change is expected to lead to lower prices for some services on the App Store, though not all. In 2021, Apple was initially required to make these adjustments, but Epic Games called out the company for failing to implement the changes promptly. As a result, Epic Games has emerged as a hero in this ongoing battle for fairer practices in app store transactions.

Overall, this update marks a positive step towards a more level playing field for developers and users alike. With greater flexibility in payment options and reduced fees, the app ecosystem is poised to become more competitive and consumer-friendly.
