How to Avoid the Subtle Pressure That Mindfulness Can Bring

For a significant period, my belief was that healing had to manifest as visible progress.

Not the subtle kind, the kind that can be easily identified. The kind that can be quantified. The kind that offers reassurance that you are on the right track.

I approached my inner journey in the same manner we are often taught to approach everything: with diligence and assessment. I delved into books. I grasped the terminology. I monitored patterns. I scrutinized my emotions as if they were forecasts I needed to decipher before the storm arrived.

Initially, it seemed beneficial. When you have been in survival mode for so long, being attentive can feel secure. It can feel like control. It can feel like finally taking action with all the pain you have been carrying.

However, gradually, something within me began to constrict.

While I was becoming more observant, I was less at ease.

I started noticing a peculiar weariness beneath my “growth.” I wasn’t merely observing my thoughts; I was policing them. I wasn’t just witnessing my feelings; I was trying to mold them into something more acceptable. Even in moments of tranquility, I felt like I was exerting effort.

That’s when a harsh truth emerged: Mindfulness had silently transformed into another form of self-surveillance.

And I no longer wanted to exist in that manner.

Resisting the subtle pressure to be “healed”


Most of us do not embark on a journey of self-monitoring intentionally. We set out to alleviate our pain. We set out to cease the hurt. We set out to make sense of our experiences.

So, we acquaint ourselves with the tools. We familiarize ourselves with the concepts. We learn to identify our triggers, recognize our patterns, and acknowledge what is transpiring within us.

This is not wrong. In fact, awareness can be transformative.

However, there comes a point where “noticing” can morph into a subtle form of pressure, especially for those of us who learned early on that love, security, or acceptance necessitated a certain demeanor.

When survival demanded vigilance, self-awareness might start resembling hyper-vigilance disguised in elegant language. Rather than surveying the surroundings, you scrutinize your inner world. Instead of preparing for others, you brace yourself for your own thoughts.

You convince yourself that you are practicing mindfulness, but beneath the surface, you are repeatedly asking yourself:

What do I need to rectify to finally feel content?

And when this question becomes the cornerstone of your practice, even healing can seem performative.

Distinguishing awareness from listening


The transition commenced when I stopped attempting to derive answers from every emotion.

This decision did not materialize in a bold, instantaneous moment. It unfolded gradually, primarily because I was fatigued.

Fatigued from turning every emotion into a project.

Fatigued from interpreting myself.

Fatigued from “doing the work” without ever reaching a place that felt like respite.

Amidst this weariness, I began discerning something crucial: Awareness and listening are not synonymous.

Awareness can be acute. It can be analytical. It can be constructive yet still tense.

Listening, on the other hand, is distinct.

Listening refrains from hastily labeling what is unfolding. It does not demand immediate significance. It does not coerce the moment to offer clarity.

Listening merely creates space.

Initially, this felt unfamiliar. Even unsettling. I had grown accustomed to mindfulness being an activity I engaged in: something that yielded insights, aided in regulation, and provided a semblance of control.

Listening did not promise control.

It offered presence.

And presence, when survival has been your norm, can feel akin to pausing after an extended run. Your body does not immediately comprehend that it is permitted to halt.

Embracing the moment as it is


One of the most significant shifts for me was learning to sit with experiences that remained unresolved.

The inclination to “decipher it” still arises. The yearning for swift clarity persists. Yet now, I can identify the impulse without succumbing to it.

At times, mindfulness entails recognizing the impulse to rectify but opting not to yield to it.

At times, it involves enduring discomfort without transforming it into a predicament to solve.

At times, it signifies allowing a query to linger until the body eases around it.

This aspect is not emphasized adequately: Healing does not always evoke relief. At times, it evokes spaciousness. At times, it evokes sorrow. At times, it elicits no dramatic reaction at all, merely fostering a quieter connection with what already exists.

And within that tranquility, a transformation occurs—not because it was coerced, but because you ceased combatting yourself.

A more authentic interpretation of growth


I once believed growth entailed swiftly navigating through challenges.

I once believed I should be capable of “processing” an emotion and reverting to normalcy.

I once held the conviction that genuine mindfulness would render me less affected, less sensitive, less human in ways that seemed inconvenient.

Now, my perception of growth has evolved.

Growth involves being with myself without hastening.

It entails recognizing old patterns and responding with kindness rather than criticism.

It signifies not abandoning myself solely because I have not reached the destination yet.

On certain days, mindfulness enables me to feel steady. On other days, mindfulness merely encourages me to speak the truth: Today, I am not okay, and yet, I am still deserving of presence.

This authenticity has proven more therapeutic than any technique I sought to master.

When mindfulness evolves into a rapport


At a certain juncture, mindfulness ceased to be a tactic and transformed into a relationship.

A relationship with my physical self.

A relationship with my inner voice.

A relationship with the fragments of me that had learned to remain vigilant.

Similar to any relationship, it necessitates trust. Not the type of trust derived from certainty—but the kind that blossoms when you exhibit consistency, gentleness, and unconditional support.

I continue to engage in practices. I continue to reflect. I continue to return to myself.

Nonetheless, I no longer regard my inner journey as something to oversee.

Instead, I consider it a realm to encounter, and this shift has revolutionized everything.

When you cease monitoring yourself, you begin discerning what truly exists.

Not solely the rehearsed thoughts, not merely the recounted narratives, but the subdued truths that have lingered beneath the cacophony.

Weariness does not denote failure


If you have been striving to heal and still experience fatigue, I want to convey something: Exhaustion does not invariably indicate you are on the wrong path.

At times, it signifies that you have been carrying your healing as an additional burden.

At times, it signifies that you have been striving to become “better” rather than fostering a deeper sense of presence.

If a part of you resonates with this, perhaps the subsequent step does not entail heightened effort.

Perhaps it demands diminished pressure.

Perhaps it entails listening.

Not to rectify yourself—but to finally coexist with yourself.
