Mikko Hyppönen, a prominent figure in the cybersecurity industry, is known for his expertise and passion for fighting malware. With over 35 years of experience, he has witnessed the evolution of cybersecurity from the early days of computer viruses to the current era of sophisticated cyber threats.

In his keynote address at Black Hat in Las Vegas in 2025, Hyppönen likened cybersecurity to a game of Tetris, where successes disappear while failures accumulate. He emphasized the invisible nature of cybersecurity work, where the goal is to prevent incidents from occurring.

Throughout his career, Hyppönen has analyzed thousands of malware strains and has become a respected voice in the cybersecurity community through his speaking engagements worldwide. Despite the advancements in cybersecurity technology, new challenges continue to emerge, including the threat posed by drones.

Living near Finland’s border with Russia, Hyppönen has a personal stake in countering drone attacks, particularly in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Transitioning from cybersecurity to drone defense, he now works on developing anti-drone systems to protect against unmanned aerial threats.

Drawing parallels between fighting malware and countering drones, Hyppönen explained the importance of using signatures and protocols to detect and neutralize threats. By analyzing radio frequencies and conducting cyberattacks against drones, he aims to disrupt their operations and prevent potential harm.

The cat-and-mouse game of cybersecurity remains a constant in Hyppönen’s career, as he continues to adapt to new challenges and adversaries. From combating Russian malware to addressing Russian drone attacks, he remains dedicated to safeguarding against evolving threats in the digital landscape.
