Google has recently announced a new feature for Gemini that allows users to easily import their chat history and memories from competitors like ChatGPT and Claude. This new feature eliminates the need to start from scratch with a new AI chatbot, saving users the time and effort of re-teaching their preferences.
The process of importing chats is straightforward. Users can export their conversation history from ChatGPT or Claude as a .zip file and upload it to gemini.google.com/import. The imported conversations will be displayed in the Gemini side panel with a unique icon to distinguish them from native chats. Users can search through these imported chats or delete them in batches. Currently, the system supports up to five .zip files per day, with a size limit of 5 GB each.
Another feature, “Importing Memory,” is designed for users who have spent time teaching an AI their specific preferences. Gemini provides a prompt that users need to copy and paste into their old AI app. The app will then generate a summary of key facts and context, which users can paste back into Gemini to quickly update their preferences.
Google has also rebranded the “past chats” feature as “Memory” to reflect the evolution of the platform. This new feature aims to create a more cohesive assistant by combining imported insights with data from Google services like Gmail, Photos, and Search, with user permission. For example, if a user previously researched hotels for a trip in another app, Gemini can use that context to assist with itinerary planning without the need for additional explanations.
While this feature is currently rolling out globally, it is not yet available in the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom due to local data regulations. Users can access these tools under the “Settings & Help” gear in the Gemini web interface.
