Discovering and accepting your truth can be a challenging journey.

When it comes to my writing process, whether it’s crafting a complaint letter, a personal essay, or a story, I typically start with an idea and allow it to evolve and take shape during a two-hour walk. It’s only after this introspection that I put pen to paper.

Researchers suggest that this method resonates with the way introverted minds operate. Introverts tend to ruminate internally before expressing their thoughts outwardly, while extroverts thrive on verbalizing their ideas spontaneously.

It’s no surprise that I struggle with the concept of freewriting, a technique that involves writing nonstop for a set period to generate ideas. On a scale of introversion, I would rank myself as an 8 or 9, making freewriting more of a source of frustration and gibberish than inspiration.

Unique Cognitive Patterns

Contrary to popular belief, individuals possess unique cognitive patterns that influence their creative processes. It can be disorienting to encounter assertions about universal psychology when your own mental workings diverge from the norm.

During workshops on the creative process, participants were asked to reflect on four successful projects they enjoyed. Upon closer examination, distinct and unconventional patterns emerged that challenged conventional wisdom.

For instance, a college professor discovered that her creative bursts occurred over intense weekend sessions, in contrast to the daily writing advice she had always received.

Another writer found that setting specific goals did little to enhance her creativity; instead, she relied on intuition and spontaneity to guide her projects.

A science fiction author drew inspiration from the artistic process of Claude Monet, working on multiple stories simultaneously based on his mood and inspiration at any given moment.

Similarly, one workshop participant realized that her productivity stemmed from rotating between tasks throughout the day, rather than hyper-focusing on a single project.

Embracing Your Cognitive Style

Recognizing and embracing your unique cognitive style is crucial for personal growth. Rather than viewing your approach as flawed or abnormal, it’s essential to acknowledge its validity and worth. This acceptance leads to inner peace, heightened self-assurance, and a greater sense of belonging in the world.

By observing and releasing self-critical judgments, you can navigate through life with a heightened sense of understanding and appreciation for your individuality.
