Daniela and Tomás had already discussed their issues before the events of this story unfolded. They had identified, acknowledged, and named the issue at hand. Their communication had improved, but they were still searching for a way to prevent the same pain from resurfacing.

Daniela, older than Tomás, and married for a decade, were raising their children in New York. Tomás, originally from Venezuela, had adapted to life in the city after spending his childhood in a family where political discussions were common, and knowing when to speak up or remain silent was crucial for survival.

On the other hand, Daniela grew up in a family where discussions were constant, covering everything from politics to personal beliefs. When her parents visited, their conversations filled the apartment, leaving Tomás feeling increasingly withdrawn as the days passed. He focused on household chores and childcare, while the conversations continued around him.

Although Daniela noticed Tomás’ silence, she was unsure of how to address it. Even after her parents left, the tension lingered, creating unease in their home.

A few nights later, when the children were asleep, Tomás expressed feeling worn out. Daniela defended her parents, stating that their intentions were harmless. However, Tomás revealed that he felt out of place in his own home, which deeply hurt Daniela.

Tomás explained how he had developed a habit of staying quiet due to his upbringing in Venezuela, where speaking up could have severe consequences. However, remaining silent during her parents’ visits left him feeling suffocated and reminded him of the challenges he faced before coming to the United States.

Their conversation that night brought them closer, but they were unsure of how to navigate the situation when her parents visited again.

Instead of dwelling on the issue, they decided to experiment with a new approach. Before the next visit, they agreed to set a boundary if political discussions arose. Daniela would politely decline to engage in such conversations, with Tomás supporting her decision.

Although they were apprehensive, they followed through with their plan during her parents’ next visit. The interaction was awkward, but they both felt a sense of relief afterward.

The experiment didn’t resolve all their issues, but it allowed them to communicate better and support each other in setting boundaries. They learned to address their needs and work together to repair the rift in their relationship.

In conclusion, after experiencing a rupture in their relationship, Daniela and Tomás realized that understanding the issue wasn’t enough. By taking action and trying new approaches, they were able to reconnect and strengthen their bond. Experimenting with different strategies allowed them to navigate challenging situations and grow together as a couple.
