Google Meet has rolled out a new feature that automatically detects when users are in a conference room and launches companion mode to join Meet calls. Previously only available on laptops, this feature is now expanding to Android and iOS devices.

The new automatic room check-in feature simplifies the process of joining meetings by utilizing the device’s microphone to pick up ultrasonic signals within the room. This allows Meet to automatically check users into group calls, eliminating unnecessary steps and streamlining the process.

Meet can intelligently detect when users are in a room using ultrasonic signals and prompts them to use companion mode before joining the call. This feature also helps to avoid echo interference from other participants, enhancing the overall user experience. Echo interference can be a common issue during virtual meetings, so this new feature aims to address that problem.

By using the highlighted “Companion mode” button, users can automatically check into the correct room when joining a meeting. The Google Meet Automatic room check-in feature is now available on the Google Meet app and Gmail for both Android and iOS users. To access this feature, users need to have Meet v336.0 on Android and iOS or Gmail V6.0.251201.

While the feature is currently available on Rapid Release domains, Scheduled Release domains will gradually receive it starting on February 2nd, 2026. This means that it may take some time before all users have access to the feature. It will be available to all Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers.

Overall, this new feature enhances the user experience for Google Meet users, making it easier and more efficient to join meetings, especially when in a conference room setting. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in virtual meeting technology.
