Workplace safety is a critical aspect that organizations must prioritize to prevent accidents and injuries that can result in significant costs. However, there is a lack of consensus on the most effective approach to safety training. This uncertainty leaves many organizations, especially those in high-risk industries, vulnerable to potential liabilities. To address this gap in knowledge, researchers conducted a meta-analysis to examine the current research on workplace safety training.

The study, conducted by Bisbey and colleagues (2025), analyzed 157 studies on safety training in the workplace. The findings revealed that safety training had a positive impact on overall workplace safety. The most significant effects were observed in immediate outcomes, such as improved trainee learning and positive responses to the training program. Moderate effects were seen in training transfer, where employees applied their new safety knowledge to their work. However, the smallest effects were noted in longer-term outcomes, such as reducing the number of accidents.

The type of training and its context were crucial determining factors in the outcomes. Technical training, focusing on specific task performance, showed improvements in individual well-being. Conversely, non-technical training, such as communication and teamwork skills, had a more substantial impact on organizational outcomes, leading to fewer accidents. Training programs that emphasized avoiding safety risks primarily enhanced organizational safety outcomes, while those focusing on building positive safety attitudes improved individual health and well-being.

In light of these findings, it is evident that workplace safety training is essential for organizations. To design effective training programs, organizations must consider their specific goals and needs. For improving safety outcomes across the organization, non-technical training like teamwork and leadership development may be necessary to shift safety attitudes and culture. On the other hand, if the goal is to enhance individual safety and health, technical training could be the most effective strategy. By utilizing an integrative framework provided by the researchers, organizations can identify the most suitable training tools to strengthen safety education, training transfer, and long-term safety outcomes.

In conclusion, workplace safety training plays a crucial role in preventing accidents and injuries. By understanding the key findings from research studies, organizations can tailor their training programs to effectively enhance safety outcomes and cultivate a culture of safety in the workplace. By prioritizing safety training and utilizing evidence-based strategies, organizations can create a safer and healthier work environment for their employees.
