Form a Family Book Club This Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, families around the world come together to celebrate and create new memories. One of my cherished childhood memories is the time my mother would read bedtime stories to me. This simple act sparked a love for reading that has stayed with me throughout my life. Curling up with a good book still brings me joy, as it evokes fond memories from the past. Building these kinds of family traditions is essential for nurturing positive and empathetic relationships with our children. This holiday season, consider starting a family book club as a gift that keeps on giving.

In today’s fast-paced world, it seems that reading is becoming a lost art. Studies show that children in the United States are reading less than ever before, opting for shorter texts over full-length novels. This shift not only robs them of the pleasure of reading but also deprives them of valuable social and cognitive skills that come from diving into a book.

Research by Dodell-Feder and Tamir reveals that individuals who read fiction exhibit better social and cognitive abilities than non-readers. They are more adept at understanding others’ perspectives, emotions, and feelings, all of which are crucial for building strong interpersonal connections and a positive self-image. Reading books, as highlighted by Elaine Reese in her work “How Stories Change Us,” offers a myriad of benefits for both children and adults. Shared reading experiences help strengthen emotional bonds, foster empathy, and enhance our understanding of the world around us.

Joining a book club, as noted by Linda-Marie Barrett, is not just about reading; it’s about forming connections and expanding horizons. A family book club goes a step further by creating intergenerational bonds, bridging the generation gap, and fostering a sense of unity through shared experiences.

This holiday season, consider starting a family book club where everyone can come together to read and discuss a chosen book. For families with young children, reading aloud and engaging in discussions can be a great way to bond and instill a love for reading early on. Apart from building literacy skills, a family book club encourages a love for reading for pleasure and personal growth. By delving into fiction as a family, you not only share the joy of reading but also create opportunities to relate the stories to your own lives and family experiences.

While gifts under the tree are exciting, consider adding books to the mix – gifts that will be enjoyed and shared throughout the year. Books have a unique ability to transport us to different worlds and perspectives, and sharing these experiences with family members can strengthen bonds and create lasting memories. This holiday season, give the gift of reading and bring your family closer together through the magic of storytelling.
