YouTube Is Changing the Dislike Button on Shorts and Here Is Why

YouTube, the well-known video streaming platform, is implementing changes to the dislike button on the Shorts player. In an ongoing test, the platform is introducing a revamped dislike button that will have a new position and purpose. The main objective behind this modification is to streamline the process of providing negative feedback.

According to YouTube, the new experiment aims to combine the Dislike and Not Interested buttons into one. Both actions will now be housed under a single button featuring a thumbs-down icon. Additionally, instead of being placed next to the Like button, the option will be relocated to the three-dot overflow menu. Some users participating in the test may see it labeled as either Dislike or Not Interested, but the functionality remains unchanged.

By clicking on the button, users signal the algorithm to decrease similar content from appearing in their feed. While this approach is not entirely novel, YouTube had previously tested a different UI for Shorts that involved hiding the Dislike button. The current experiment, however, distinguishes itself by treating Dislike and Not Interested as synonymous feedback options.

Google, in its statement, explains that these two options are often used interchangeably by users who may not fully grasp the distinction between them. The redesign is intended to simplify the process, enabling users to better customize their Shorts feed. Furthermore, the tech giant emphasizes that the change is a response to feedback indicating a desire for clearer controls over content visibility.

Participants in the experiment might encounter an optional survey after selecting the new Dislike/Not Interested button. This survey includes questions about why the user disliked the content, with the responses being utilized to refine the algorithm. As with many YouTube experiments, the implementation is limited, and there is no guarantee that the changes will be implemented in the stable version.

In conclusion, YouTube is making adjustments to the dislike button on Shorts to enhance user experience and provide more personalized content recommendations. The platform’s aim is to simplify negative feedback and offer clearer controls for users to tailor their viewing preferences. This ongoing experiment reflects YouTube’s commitment to refining its features based on user feedback and preferences.
