Google is set to bring a popular iPhone feature, AirDrop, to Android devices, marking a significant development in file-sharing capabilities between different platforms.
Since its introduction in 2013, AirDrop has allowed seamless and secure sharing of photos, videos, and files among Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Android has its own version called Quick Share, but it has been limited to devices running Google’s OS.
In an unexpected move, Google announced that Quick Share will soon be compatible with AirDrop, enabling file sharing between Android and iOS devices. Initially available on the Pixel 10 series, Google plans to expand this feature to more Android devices in the future.
To receive files on Apple devices, ensure the AirDrop setting is enabled for “Everyone for 10 Minutes.” On Android, choose “Everyone” or “Everyone for 10 minutes” and ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on for both devices.
A move made in Brussels
Despite the collaboration between Google and Apple in bringing AirDrop to Android, Apple was not involved in the process. Google emphasizes that the feature is not a workaround and establishes a direct peer-to-peer connection for secure file sharing.
This development is a direct result of new European Union regulations, specifically a specification in the Digital Markets Act (DMA), requiring Apple to adopt a new standard for AirDrop starting with iOS 26.

Foundry
Following the release of iOS 26, Google was able to develop a wireless sharing tool compatible with AirDrop, leveraging its expertise as the maker of Android. This move has been long-awaited and marks a significant advancement in cross-platform file sharing.
After 12 years, Android users will finally be able to share files with iOS devices using AirDrop. This development, driven by both Google and EU regulations, signifies a major step forward in interoperability between different operating systems.
