Wikipedia’s Strategy for AI Era Support

Wikipedia unveiled a straightforward plan on Monday to ensure ongoing support for its platform in the age of artificial intelligence, despite facing a decline in traffic. The Wikimedia Foundation, the entity behind the renowned online encyclopedia, issued a call to AI developers to handle its content with responsibility. This involves proper attribution of contributions and accessing content via the paid Wikimedia Enterprise platform.

The Wikimedia Enterprise platform is a paid product designed for companies to utilize Wikipedia’s content at scale without overburdening its servers. This approach also enables AI firms to contribute to the organization’s nonprofit mission.

While Wikipedia refrained from issuing threats or legal consequences for unauthorized use of its content through scraping, it did highlight recent instances of AI bots attempting to scrape its site while mimicking human behavior. Following an update to its bot detection systems, Wikipedia discovered that a significant portion of its traffic in May and June originated from AI bots evading detection. This development coincided with an 8% decline in human page views year-over-year.

As part of its efforts to regulate AI utilization, Wikipedia is setting out guidelines for developers and providers. Generative AI developers are encouraged to provide proper attribution to acknowledge the human contributors whose content serves as the basis for their outputs.

Emphasizing the importance of transparency in information sharing, Wikipedia underscores the need for platforms to clearly indicate the sources of information and promote engagement with those sources. The organization recognizes that diminished traffic to its platform could impede the growth of volunteers and reduce support from individual donors.

Earlier this year, Wikipedia introduced its AI strategy for editors, focusing on leveraging AI to assist editors in streamlining tasks, facilitating translation processes, and offering tools to support editors rather than replace them.
