Tesla CEO Elon Musk to Unveil Second-Generation Roadster in 2026
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced during the company’s annual shareholder meeting that the production version of the second-generation Roadster supercar will be revealed on April 1, 2026. This unveiling comes almost nine years after the project was initially revealed by Musk.
Known for missing deadlines, Musk chose April Fools’ Day for the reveal, joking that he could claim it was a prank if the unveiling is delayed further. Just a week prior, Musk had hinted on Joe Rogan’s podcast that he intended to showcase the car by the end of the year, making the 2026 reveal a delay in itself.
Emphasizing that the new Roadster will be significantly different from its previous iteration, Musk teased that the demo will be the most exciting ever, regardless of its success. There have been speculations about the new Roadster potentially featuring thrusters built by SpaceX.
Musk mentioned that the production of the second-generation Roadster is expected to commence 12 to 18 months after the April 2026 reveal. Shareholders inquired if customers who preordered the “Founders Series” version of the Roadster back in 2017 could attend the reveal event, to which Musk responded affirmatively.

One of the long-time Roadster reservation holders, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared his experience of attempting to cancel his reservation and initially facing difficulties in obtaining a refund. Musk, engaging in a public spat with Altman, pointed out that the refund issue was swiftly resolved within 24 hours.
Altman expressed his excitement for the Roadster but highlighted the frustration of waiting for 7.5 years. Despite the delays, Musk assured customers that the new Roadster would be worth the wait, and those who have patiently reserved the vehicle will be rewarded for their dedication.
