Exploring Awareness in Meditation
In the practice of meditation, the goal is to uncover the true nature of awareness, detached from any specific object. In a state of enlightenment, awareness itself becomes the focus of attention.
To truly grasp this concept, one must allow their focus to expand beyond all objects within consciousness – surpassing the physical body, the mind, the world, and even the vast universe. Even the universe can be perceived as an object within one’s consciousness.
The challenge of understanding enlightenment lies in the realization that what we seek is not an object to be attained. Many of us are trapped in a dualistic mindset of self and other, self and world, and even self and enlightenment. Often, spiritual practices aimed at cultivating awareness inadvertently reinforce this dualistic perspective.
A wise teacher once shared with me, “I’m glad you’ve found a friend you’ll never see.” This friend, symbolizing the enlightened mind, emerges when one recognizes that the truest essence of the self is already free.
This liberated aspect of oneself cannot be grasped through conventional mindfulness practices. However, when one relinquishes control and surrenders to the unknown, this liberated self can respond with spontaneity and precision, seemingly without conscious thought.
Suddenly, the right response emerges effortlessly. It is only after this swift reaction that one becomes aware of a vigilant aspect of oneself that is always present, even when not consciously recognized. This constant vigilance manifests as the astonishing spontaneity of enlightened awareness.
While many aspire to attain enlightenment, few are prepared to surrender completely to a friend they cannot see. The idea of relinquishing control and allowing this unseen friend to guide one’s life may seem unfathomable, as it requires a level of surrender that challenges the ego’s dominance.
This surrender marks the beginning of humility, as one develops a non-materialistic, unknowing relationship with their deepest self – a mysterious, immeasurable essence. This shift in perspective paves the way for the unseen friend to communicate through you and ultimately shape your true identity.
