Google Confirms Ads Are Coming to AI Mode, But What About Gemini?

Google has taken a step forward in clarifying how it plans to monetize its new AI products. Robbie Stein, Google’s VP of Product, recently confirmed that the company is working on incorporating ads into its Search features, specifically AI Mode and other AI experiences. However, he did not explicitly mention the standalone Gemini chatbot service in his statement.

There have been reports suggesting that ads could soon be seen on Gemini, based on Stein’s appearance on the “Silicon Valley Girl” podcast. However, some misinterpretations of his words have led to confusion.

During the podcast, Stein mentioned that ad integration is already in progress, stating, “We’ve started some experiments on ads within AI Mode and within Google AI experiences.” This indicates that the generative features integrated into the Search experience will be the next frontier for advertising revenue. While Gemini was not specifically mentioned as a product that will receive ads, the term “Google AI experiences” suggests that any AI product connected to the main Google stream could potentially be included in the future.

Stein emphasized that Google’s primary focus has been on creating great consumer products first, but users may start to see some ad experiments in these AI experiences as well.

Regarding ad formats, Stein hinted that the ads may not follow the traditional sponsored links format. Google is exploring new and innovative ad formats that could seamlessly integrate into conversational interfaces. This presents an opportunity for advertising to be even more helpful in this new context.

This confirms Google’s direction in terms of monetization strategy, as it looks towards an AI-enhanced future driven by advertising revenue. While the exact format and placement of these new AI ads are still being developed, experiments are underway, signaling the next evolution of search monetization for the company.

In conclusion, Google is moving towards incorporating ads into its AI products, with a focus on creating a more natural and helpful advertising experience for users. While the specifics are still being ironed out, the company is taking steps towards integrating ads into its AI Mode and other AI experiences, potentially opening up new avenues for revenue generation.
