Capital One tightens Venture family card terms for bonuses

It has become more challenging to earn welcome bonuses on multiple popular Capital One cards, as Capital One has implemented a 48-month restriction across its Venture family of cards.

This includes the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card ($0 annual fee), the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card ($95 annual fee) and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card ($395 annual fee).

The new rule essentially limits cardholders from moving “down” within the Venture suite (in terms of annual fees) if they’ve opened a new Venture-family card and earned a bonus in the last 48 months.

Capital One still permits those with the lower-annual-fee products to be approved for a Venture-family card that charges a higher annual fee, so “upward” movement within the lineup is allowed.

Here are the full details.

Capital One’s new Venture family rule

Because this new Venture family rule restricts “downward” movement in terms of annual fees, current Venture X cardholders who have applied for the card and received the bonus in the last 48 months are the most affected.

That’s because Venture X cardholders who have opened the $395-annual-fee product or received the bonus in the last 48 months will not be allowed to open a VentureOne or Venture card. A Capital One representative confirmed to TPG that those who are denied the VentureOne or the Venture may be eligible for a “terms-modified version of VentureOne” without a welcome bonus.

Let’s break it down by card to understand how the rule relates to each product.

  • If you’re applying for the VentureOne: You are not eligible for the card or the bonus if you’ve earned the VentureOne, Venture or Venture X bonus within the last 48 months.
  • If you’re applying for the Venture: You are not eligible for the card or the bonus if you’ve earned the Venture or Venture X bonus within the last 48 months. If you’ve only opened or received the VentureOne bonus, you are eligible for the Venture card and bonus.
  • If you’re applying for the Venture X: You are not eligible for the card or bonus if you’ve opened or earned the Venture X bonus within the last 48 months. If you’ve only opened or received the Venture or VentureOne bonus, you are eligible for the Venture X card and its bonus.

Capital One has limited cardholders to a 48-month waiting period between earning welcome bonuses on the same personal card since 2023, so this new rule essentially expands the restriction to all Venture-branded cards.

Capital One’s other application restrictions require you to wait six months between approvals for new Capital One cards, including both personal and business cards.

Capital One Venture lineup welcome bonuses

If you’re eligible for a new Capital One card in its Venture family, you may want to put in your application to secure one of these welcome offers:

  • VentureOne: Receive $100 to use on Capital One Travel in your first cardholder year (no spending required), plus earn 20,000 miles after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
  • Venture: Earn 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
  • Venture X: Earn 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

TPG’s October 2025 valuations deem Capital One miles as worth 1.85 cents apiece, and there are many ways you can maximize your rewards to make them even more valuable.

Bottom line

It’s now more difficult to be approved for and receive a bonus on cards within Capital One’s Venture family if you already have a Venture product and received it in the last 48 months.

This is an especially negative change for Venture X cardholders who have earned the bonus on that card in the last 48 months, since they’re unable to be approved for or receive the bonus for any other personal Venture card until that 48-month window expires.

You can still “move up” the Venture-family ladder, starting with the VentureOne before going to the Venture or Venture X (or going from the Venture to the Venture X). Still, it’s important to consider all application restrictions when applying for a new card.
