Introducing the Concept of “Workslop”: The Impact of Low-Quality AI-Generated Work

Experts at BetterUp Labs, in partnership with Stanford Social Media Lab, have introduced a new term to characterize subpar AI-generated work: “workslop.”

Described in a recent article featured in the Harvard Business Review, workslop refers to AI-generated content that appears to be high-quality but lacks the depth needed to effectively move a project forward.

According to researchers at BetterUp Labs, workslop may be a contributing factor to the 95% of organizations that have implemented AI without experiencing any tangible benefits. Workslop is often identified as content that is unhelpful, incomplete, or devoid of essential context, ultimately leading to additional work for others involved in the project.

One of the key consequences of workslop is that it shifts the responsibility of completing the work onto others, forcing them to interpret, correct, or redo the initial AI-generated content.

In an effort to understand the prevalence of workslop in the workplace, researchers conducted a survey of 1,150 full-time employees in the United States. Results showed that 40% of respondents had encountered workslop within the past month.

To combat the negative effects of workslop, experts recommend that leaders within organizations demonstrate thoughtful AI usage with clearly defined purposes and intentions. Establishing clear guidelines and boundaries for AI utilization can help mitigate the risks associated with workslop and ensure that AI technology is used effectively within the workplace.
