‘Shrekking’ Is a Dating Trend That Has Its Risks

Dating in the modern age has taken on a new phenomenon known as “Shrakking” on social media platforms. While this practice may seem unconventional at first glance, it involves intentionally dating someone who is perceived to be below your standards in order to maintain control in the relationship. The underlying belief is that the other person will be so grateful to have you that they will go above and beyond to keep you happy. However, this strategy can backfire and lead to what is referred to as “Shrekoning” when the so-called inferior partner fails to meet expectations and is ultimately dumped, also known as “being shraked” on social media.

The concept of being compared to Shrek, the ogre from the popular Dreamworks animation film franchise, is not exactly flattering. It implies being seen as unattractive or undesirable, which is not something most people aspire to. Shrakking is different from making compromises or seeing beyond superficial qualities, as it involves deliberately choosing a partner perceived to be inferior for the sake of maintaining power dynamics in the relationship.

Shrakking operates on the assumption that there is a clear hierarchy in dating that everyone adheres to, which may not necessarily be the case. People have different priorities and values when it comes to relationships, making it difficult to rank individuals based on superficial criteria. Additionally, assuming that everyone is aware of their place in this hierarchy and accepts it willingly is unrealistic, as people often have skewed perceptions of their own desirability.

Furthermore, relationships are dynamic and subject to change over time. What may have initially attracted you to someone may not be as important as you get to know them better. Superficial qualities like appearance or wealth can lose their significance as deeper compatibility and shared values come to the forefront. Therefore, basing a relationship solely on power dynamics and perceived superiority can be risky, as circumstances and perceptions can shift.

Ultimately, successful relationships are built on mutual respect, understanding, and compatibility. Communication is key in any relationship, so it’s important to be honest with your partner about your intentions and feelings. If there is a fundamental mismatch in expectations and values, it’s better to address it early on rather than let resentment build up. Instead of engaging in Shrakking, strive for an equal partnership based on mutual respect and genuine connection to avoid ending up in a wreck of a relationship.

In conclusion, while Shrakking may offer a sense of control in the short term, it is not a sustainable or fulfilling approach to relationships. It’s important to prioritize compatibility, communication, and mutual respect in any relationship to ensure long-term happiness and satisfaction.
