If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, choosing the right device is just the first step. To use your phone for calls, texts, and mobile data, you’ll need a SIM card or eSIM from a network provider. In the UK, there used to be four major networks, but now there are only three after the merger of Vodafone and Three. Despite this, there are still a variety of MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) that utilize these networks, making it challenging to determine the best option for you.

In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the three main networks and the various MVNOs that operate on their infrastructure. By the end of this article, you’ll have a clear understanding of the services offered by each network, whether you’re considering a contract phone or a SIM-only deal.

Since December 2021, all phones sold in the UK are unlocked by law, allowing for easy switching between providers while retaining your phone number. If you’re still undecided about which phone to purchase, check out our recommendations for the best budget, mid-range, and overall smartphones.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the three main networks in the UK:

VodafoneThree, a result of the merger between Vodafone and Three, has recently become the largest phone network in the UK. This partnership is expected to benefit customers gradually, offering improved coverage and services. Three boasts nearly 99.8% coverage, while Vodafone covers 97% of the population with its 4G network.

For those looking to use the Three network, you can choose from a variety of iPhone, Samsung, Google, Honor, Motorola, Xiaomi, and Nokia phones on contract. SIM-only deals range from £11 to £38 per month, with additional perks such as Three+ rewards and roaming options.

On the Vodafone network, you’ll find a selection of iPhone, Samsung, Google, Motorola, Honor, Doro, and HMD phones on contract. SIM-only deals range from £7 to £54 per month, with varying levels of benefits and EU roaming options.

Additionally, there are several MVNOs that operate on the Three and Vodafone networks:

– iD Mobile offers contract phones and SIM-only deals with prices ranging from £6 to £18 per month, along with free EU roaming.
– Smarty provides SIM-only deals from £6 to £20 per month, with the option to get money back for unused data and free EU roaming.
– Voxi offers a range of contract phones and SIM-only deals, including unlimited use of selected social media apps and EU roaming options.

Overall, the merger of Vodafone and Three has the potential to enhance the mobile experience for customers across the UK. As the partnership continues to evolve, customers can expect to see improvements in coverage, services, and overall network performance.
