Qualcomm is gearing up to release its latest flagship chip, and leaks are hinting at a significant boost in performance. While initially thought to be named Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, new rumors are circulating that it might actually be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This unexpected name change has caused some confusion in the tech community, especially since Qualcomm has been known to complicate its naming conventions in the past.

According to a recent report by Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the upcoming flagship chip, codenamed SM8850, could be named Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 instead of Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. This unexpected twist in naming conventions has left many eagerly awaiting the official announcement from Qualcomm.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding its name, the performance of the chip seems to be top-notch. Rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 could achieve an impressive score of over 4 million on AnTuTu’s benchmark. This would make it one of the most powerful mobile processors in the market, surpassing many of its competitors by a significant margin.

The chip is expected to feature a powerful CPU core configuration, with 2x “Prime” cores clocked at 4.61GHz and six high-performance cores at 3.63GHz. Additionally, it will come equipped with an Adreno 840 GPU for exceptional mobile gaming graphics and advanced AI capabilities.

Qualcomm is also collaborating with Samsung to release a special version of the chip exclusively for the upcoming Galaxy S26 series. This variant will have even higher clock speeds for the Prime cores, giving Samsung a temporary edge in performance. However, this exclusive version is expected to be available to other smartphone manufacturers after a certain period.

The official details about Qualcomm’s next flagship chip are set to be revealed at the Snapdragon Summit 2025 on September 23. Until then, the name of the chip remains a closely guarded secret, adding to the anticipation surrounding its launch.
