How Stoicism Can Help Us Survive It

In today’s fast-paced world, staying informed can be overwhelming. Differentiating between genuine news, speculation, and AI-generated content designed to deceive us is a challenge. Even individuals with a background in journalism struggle to navigate the constant influx of information. Taking an online quiz to identify AI-generated photos, I failed spectacularly, highlighting the complexity of distinguishing truth from fiction in today’s media landscape.

Stoicism offers a valuable perspective on processing information by encouraging individuals to evaluate whether they can impact a situation. If the answer is no, Stoics advise letting go and focusing on what can be controlled. While this approach can be challenging, particularly when external events affect us or our loved ones, it helps in maintaining a sense of inner peace amidst chaos.

Contrary to common misconceptions, Stoicism does not advocate for suppressing emotions. Emotions are valid and essential, but Stoics emphasize not allowing them to overpower rational thinking. Strategies like shifting focus to what can be controlled in one’s life, engaging in creative activities, or contributing to the well-being of others can help in managing emotions effectively.

Stoics acknowledge the complexities of the world, recognizing both its positive and negative aspects. They do not shy away from reality but strive to maintain a balanced perspective. Similar to social media algorithms that show content based on user interaction, Stoics emphasize the importance of controlling what information one consumes. By minimizing exposure to negative news and focusing on positive aspects of life, individuals can cultivate a healthier mindset.

Addressing the issue of smartphone addiction, Stoics advocate for temperance and self-restraint. Acknowledging personal responsibility for excessive screen time is the first step towards making positive changes. Implementing strategies like silencing notifications and batching information delivery can help in reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

It’s essential to remember that the online world is a curated representation of reality, designed to capture attention and generate profit. To reconnect with the real world, Stoics recommend engaging in meaningful activities that resonate with one’s values and beliefs. By focusing on what can be controlled and limiting exposure to negative news, individuals can enhance their mental well-being and contribute positively to the world around them.

In conclusion, Stoicism offers valuable insights on navigating the complexities of the modern information landscape. By adopting a mindful approach to news consumption, focusing on what is within one’s control, and maintaining a balanced perspective, individuals can cultivate a sense of inner peace and well-being amidst the constant noise of the 24-hour news cycle.
